Why do we listen to inspiring stories, discourses, read the scriptures, etc?
First, we need to know that such things exist. When I was a child, I would read the Kathamrit distributed by RK Mission and each story was so inspiring for me. I wanted to be like them. There was a Shiva Lingam in our backyard and I was so attracted to it. I would offer water daily. Lord Shiva was my God and Swami Vivekananda was my hero.
My mother undoubtedly was my first Guru. She introduced me to the world of books including the works of Bhasa, Banabhatta and Kalidasa. Mahabharat was my favorite.
So I came to know and believe in Rishis (see rs), Agnihotra (sacred fire ritual ceremonies) , daiva (divine), Kings when I was quite young and got inspired by it. And as I grew up and started pursuing the truth seriously, the tug of war between truth and i ignorance or Avidya began. But that is a long story.
So you get inspired, start believing, and develop interest through listening. When you grow up in life, you seek the truth. I can give you the truth right now but will you take it? Even if you will, how long will it last? Someone else's experience can be information, interesting, inspiring, even spine chilling, but it isn't yours. It may not last long. But if something is in your experience, it is different.
So how to get there? Simply by doing what you are asked to do. Of course, there are methods. Empty your cup before beginning to learn from your master. Anybody who gets a master is really lucky because a lot of seekers do not get one. Learning needs discipline, dedication and gratitude. You also need to be a good seeker.
